Committee approves Magellan's sidewalk cafe permit, holds two bartender applications

The Waukesha City Ordinance and Licensing Committee unanimously approved Magellan's extension of premises and its sidewalk café permit at its Feb. 23 meeting, while holding two invited bartender applications over for additional follow-up.

The committee heard that the clerk's office packet contained no complaints about Magellan's and that the sidewalk café and extension are annual items tied to the restaurant's Saint Patrick's Day plans. Alicia, a committee member, moved to approve Magellan's extension of premises and sidewalk café as presented; the motion was seconded by Alderperson Helvins Leven and Alderperson Steve Van Trieste and carried unanimously. After the vote the chair announced the motion passed without objection.

During review of invited bartender applications, city staff member Brian reported he had not found records that would bar either applicant from licensure, saying “I didn't see anything in their records that would prevent them from being issued a license,” but noted most offenses cited were 8–9 years old and that one applicant had self-reported a recent OWI that did not appear on the police check. Committee members agreed to hold the Sarah Elizabeth Evans (Q Club) and Lupita Roque applications to the next meeting so staff can follow up on the OWI disclosure and complete any necessary checks.

Alicia asked whether engineering notes were included for sidewalk attachments; staff said engineering comments are included in the application file and any attachments must comply with city code. The committee emphasized that sidewalk cafés must follow code requirements and engineering guidance.

The committee took no other action on licensing items. The meeting adjourned at 6:21 p.m.
