Board hears curriculum updates and federal‑grant waiver plans; Title I and dyslexia screening discussed

Administrators briefed the board on curriculum, assessment and federal grant matters during the July meeting.
Dr. Bieber described adjustments to the district’s high‑ability identification: the Indiana Department of Education now requires screening of all kindergarten students; the district will use a pre‑screener and the COGAP battery for full assessment in grades 2 and 4. She emphasized that high‑ability students receive differentiation in general‑education classrooms when not placed in the board‑approved specialized class.
On reading and dyslexia screening, Dr. Bieber said the district must screen K–2 students with DIBELS and report dyslexia data as required. She reported about 201 students in the district’s two elementary schools are receiving targeted reading interventions.
Dr. Bieber also said the district will apply for two federal waivers (referred to as "Edflex" waivers in the transcript) to allow the district to use local paraprofessional training rather than the ParaPro assessment. She warned that the district’s Title IV grant exceeded a threshold by roughly $551, which could require a budget rewrite and minor reallocations; she noted the district’s federal grant management tool was recently approved.
