Ely Council prioritizes wastewater treatment upgrade for CDBG application

The Ely City Council voted unanimously on Nov. 13 to prioritize the Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade Project as the City’s top Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application for the 2026–2027 program year, with the E. 15th Street Waterline Project listed second.
City Engineer B.J. Almberg told the council staff recommends the wastewater project as first priority. City Clerk Jennifer Lee reminded the council the City recently received an EPA grant that can be used as part of the funding package and that CDBG can qualify as match for other federal funding. The Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade was listed at $603,750; the E. 15th Street Waterline Project at $422,400.
Councilwoman Jerri Lynn Williams-Harper moved to set the Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade as first priority and the E. 15th Street Waterline as second; Councilwoman Michelle Yeoman seconded the motion, which carried unanimously.
Next steps: staff will proceed with the formal CDBG application process for the prioritized projects and will integrate available EPA funds and other matching sources as appropriate.
