Commission buys kayak-assist unit, discusses trails, pollinator event and volunteer projects

The Atkinson Conservation Commission on April 22 confirmed it purchased one KayaArm kayak-assist unit and will evaluate installation and usability before deciding whether to buy a second.
Chair Bill Steele said the company provided installation instructions and operation guidance; Selectman Paul Wainwright asked whether the Commission planned to add a railing, and Steele said the unit will be installed first to determine if a railing is necessary. Member Jeff Nenart suggested soliciting public input about railings via the town website. Steele said he hopes the KayaArm will be installed by Memorial Day.
On trails, Member Jeff Nenart reported the Slade All-Persons Trail is in good shape and well used; Selectman Wainwright said a few punch-list items remain and that the Commission should add a brass plaque to acknowledge donors — Phil Busby may donate a stone for mounting the plaque. Alternate Sandy Cannon reported that a floating dock on the Shaffer Trail is sitting on top of the dam and could be at risk; Member Nenart said that location is outside the Commission's jurisdiction and Chair Steele asked Cannon to contact SELT to address debris and bridge-roof repair.
The Commission agreed to consider bridge improvements (mesh to reduce slipping) pending condo-owner approval for a bridge proposal at Knightland. Chair Steele offered to prioritize the bridge if the condo association approves.
Community events and volunteers were on the agenda: Secretary Suzie Newman said the Commission will hold a pollinator event June 20 at Freshwater Farms and asked whether Boy Scouts could help build solitary-bee houses; Member Pitts said Troop 9 needs a conservation project. The Commission will march in the Memorial Day parade, run a tree giveaway and restock paper trail maps (Erika Halaby agreed to help). Member Jeff Nenart said his daughter's Girl Scout Gold Award project was approved and she will present plans for work on multiple trails.
