The Ely City Council on Jan. 8 proclaimed Feb. 9-12, 2026 as "Hope Week" after hearing a presentation from local high-school Hope Squad leaders and their advisor about a slate of events to promote peer support and suicide-prevention work.
Councilwoman Jerri Lynn Williams-Harper introduced the request and Ms. Peterson, the Hope Squad advisor, described the group's focus on suicide prevention through peer support and connection to professional services. Student member Brindel Blades summarized planned daily themes: activewear self-care (Feb. 9), "Kindness Counts" recognition (Feb. 10), tie-dye to express emotions (Feb. 11), and a community day encouraging wearing purple or purchasing a Hope Squad shirt (Feb. 12).
Ms. Peterson said the Hope Squad is partnering with the local committee Together We Belong and expects community participation, including a family bingo night on Feb. 12 at the Convention Center with free bingo cards and donated prizes. The group asked the Council and community organizations to post photos of participation; organizers plan to display images in community locations.
Council members voted unanimously to adopt the proclamation.
The proclamation invites community organizations, businesses and residents to participate in dress-up days and the Feb. 12 family bingo night to build youth-peer support and community connections.
