Dobbs Ferry senior Annabella Chilton describes astrophysics research to Greenburgh board

Annabella Chilton, introduced to the board as a local Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair competitor, described a high-school research project that analyzed simulated data for gravitational-wave detectors.
Chilton said she used publicly available simulated catalogs (COSMIC) and Python analysis to study how a planned space-based detector (LISA) would complement ground-based detectors (LIGO) when measuring different classes of astrophysical systems. "It's going to have lasers in space that are having laser beams over 2,500,000 kilometers," she said, explaining why the detectors probe different sources and why collaboration between detector teams matters.
She told the board she won first place in her category at the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair and later advanced to the Regeneron international fair. Chilton said she will attend Carnegie Mellon University this August to study physics and vocal performance.
Board members and attendees congratulated Chilton and wished her success in college and future research.
