Giltner Public Schools board raises substitute pay to $155 and addresses lunch fund shortfall

President Schutt presided over the Giltner Public Schools Board of Education meeting on May 11, where the board unanimously approved raising the 2026–27 substitute teacher daily rate to $155.
The decision followed remarks from staff members Gordon and Finkey, who told the board the district’s substitute rate is among the lowest locally and recommended an increase to remain competitive and retain substitutes. Wilson moved to set the rate at $155 per day; Lyon seconded the motion, which passed by roll call vote 6-0.
Board members also reviewed the district’s triennial health assessment, a state-required 10-step review. Staff member Gordon told the board the district currently meets all 10 steps and noted that the district will need to update kitchen facilities in the future as part of ongoing compliance and improvement efforts.
A more immediate fiscal concern involved the school lunch program. Gordon said a $4,500 transfer was made into the lunch fund after monthly state reimbursement from Nebraska (about $5,000) was delayed, and that several student meal accounts were overdrawn. He said the district has worked to collect delinquent balances through additional letters and personal phone calls, which have reduced delinquency compared with earlier in the year. Gordon said the district had transferred approximately $24,500 in additional funds this year to sustain the lunch program beyond payments received. Board members Lyon and Wilson emphasized they did not want students to go hungry; the board discussed policy options including restricting seconds for students whose balances reach negative $200 or beyond and encouraging families to complete free/reduced lunch applications to increase program participation.
No public commenters addressed the board during the meeting. The board also approved routine items by roll call vote, including the April meeting minutes and payment of April claims. The board set the next regular meeting tentatively for Monday, June 8, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in the Giltner School library and adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
