Cooleemee commissioners approve paving quotes, interim attorney contract and Planning Board appointment

The Cooleemee Board of Commissioners on Nov. 18 approved a set of routine but binding actions including street paving quotes, an interim attorney arrangement and a Planning Board appointment.
Commissioner Tippett moved to proceed with quotes from Hanes Paving to pave Ruffin Street for $36,960 and Erwin Street for $28,875; the motion, seconded by Commissioner Ferrell, carried 3-0. The quotes include raising manholes and adjusting any water or gas valves located in the roadway as part of the work.
The board also addressed the town's legal services contract. The town attorney offered a full-year option at $9,000 or a month-to-month arrangement at $750 while the town posts and considers long-term counsel. Commissioner Tippett moved to accept the $750-per-month option contingent on Attorney Terry agreeing to extend the current contract through June 30, 2025; Commissioner Ferrell seconded and the motion carried 3-0.
In a surplus-property action, the board accepted closed bids for the dismantling and sale of car sheds formerly used by the Police Department. Six bids were received and Tommy Hampton was awarded the sheds at $650 per shed; the Clerk will contact the bidder to complete arrangements.
Commissioner Ferrell moved to nominate Jamie Lawhon of Junction Road to fill a seat on the Planning Board, bringing the panel to a full five members; Commissioner Tippett seconded and the motion carried 3-0.
All recorded motions during the meeting passed by 3-0 votes. No budget appropriation for the paving or building projects was approved at this meeting; commissioners directed staff to obtain final contracts and cost details for future consideration.
