Natchez accepts $2 million federal earmark for Canal Street bridge project

James Johnston in community development told the board the city had received the $2,000,000 federal earmark from the U.S. Department of Transportation through the Mississippi Department of Transportation and that the city also received a $500,000 state appropriation this year related to the same project. Johnston asked the board to authorize the mayor to request activation of the project and to appoint a project director; the motion passed by voice vote.
Mayor Moore said the funds will flow through MDOT and that staff will coordinate required documentation and project activation. Johnston told the board the award represents an earmark and that the city is prepared to move forward with project implementation steps, including signing any necessary project documents and appointing a local project director.
What happens next: The mayor and staff will coordinate with the Mississippi Department of Transportation to activate the earmark and proceed to contract and project-implementation steps. The board voted in favor of the authorization and will receive future updates from staff.
