Craven County approves $400,256 fiber relocation for NCDOT Project R-5777C; county to pay about $65,010 after reimbursement

Craven County commissioners on July 6 approved a $400,256 budget amendment to replace and upgrade more than seven miles of county fiber-optic cable that are in conflict with the I-42/Highway 70 expansion (Project R-5777C). The Board voted 6-0 to authorize contracts for materials and installation.
Information Technology Director Steve Bennett told the Board the replacement runs from Rivershore Drive on Old Cherry Point Road to Hazeldale Lane and serves water assets, Craven County Schools, Craven Community College and the Craven-Pamlico Regional Library. NCDOT will reimburse the county $335,246.25; the county’s remaining obligation is $65,009.69. Bennett said the project includes a higher-count fiber as a betterment that increases long-term capacity and noted the county’s fiber upgrade is the first in more than 20 years.
Bennett also said bids were accepted in May and River City Construction was the lowest qualified bidder. Commissioners emphasized the importance of added capacity for eastern Craven County utilities and public services during the discussion. The motion to approve the budget amendment was made by Commissioner Tim Mason and seconded by Vice-Chairman Jason R. Jones; it carried 6-0.
Next steps include contract execution and coordination with NCDOT on the reimbursement schedule. The county’s capital outlay line will fund the county portion of the work as approved by the Board.
