Sergeant Grisha awarded medal of valor after riverbank rescue and arrest

Aaron Uecker, who identified himself as a member of the Columbus Police Department, described a December critical incident and presented a medal of valor to Sergeant Grisha for actions that, Uecker said, saved lives and helped secure an arrest.

Uecker told the council the call came in early morning and that responding officers found multiple people shot and a fleeing suspect. "He applied a tourniquet," Uecker said of Sergeant Grisha, and he began questioning surviving victims to gather information that "subsequently helped find the suspect." Uecker said Grisha descended a steep, unstable riverbank to reach a vehicle and that Grisha made the arrest at the scene.

The presentation emphasized the department's criteria for awards linked to "critical incidents," which Uecker defined as sudden, typically violent events that can overwhelm normal coping mechanisms. "Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation causes your worst fears to come true," Uecker said, explaining why decisive action matters in such calls.

Mayor (presiding) and council members greeted the presentation; the mayor thanked the chief and invited the recipient to remain for the meeting. The presenter invited the sergeant and his spouse to the front for the commendation; paper copies of the written commendation were included in the meeting packet, according to the presenter.

The council returned to routine business after the commendation. Cake and refreshments were noted as available to attendees following the award presentation.
