The Town of Cooleemee Board authorized up to $1,000 on Oct. 21 to purchase and post 25 mph speed-limit signs in locations the board identified as lacking clear signage.
The decision followed a briefing from Sgt. Crotts, who reported 473 officer hours logged, 99 calls and about 30 traffic-related incidents, plus 12 security checks. Sgt. Crotts and Clerk Steven Corriher told the board many town streets have no or limited posted speed limits, which complicates enforcement.
Sheriff Hartman described grant opportunities for equipment that can measure vehicle speeds more precisely to help determine when motorists are actually exceeding limits versus appearing to do so. The board said clearer signage and better data would help law enforcement target enforcement more effectively.
Commissioner Almond moved to authorize the purchase; Commissioner Reavis seconded and the motion carried 4-0. The board did not specify exact locations for the new signs in the minutes; the clerk indicated staff will identify where signs are needed and proceed within the $1,000 authorization.
No changes to speed limits were adopted at the meeting; the motion funded signage only. Any enforcement actions or equipment purchases tied to grants will follow grant terms and separate approvals.
