Acton sustainability office highlights regional bike-share; rides start at $2

Lauren West, an environmental analyst in the town of Acton nd a member of the town epartment—or sustainability, outlined a regional bike-share network meant to provide last-mile connections between commuter rail and nearby destinations.
"There is a cross municipal bike share program that is available in the towns of Acton, Concord, Lincoln, and Maynard," West said, noting the system has seven stations, including one at the South Acton commuter rail station.
West said rides cost $2 for 30 minutes and an annual membership is available that allows riders to check out a bike, lock it during the day and return it later. "Rides are $2 for 30 or there's also an option for a annual membership where you're able to take the bike out and lock it up during the day and bring it back," she said.
Asked how many people use the system, West said, "We had about 300 riders in a month when the program started up," and that ridership tends to peak in summer.
The service operates on a seasonal schedule, West said, beginning in April and running through the end of November; she added that the bikes are removed from service starting Dec. 1 for the winter.
West walked through the basic user steps for renting a bike: go to a station, download the operator pp and sign up. She also emphasized safety: "Reminders, always wear a helmet when you're renting. Make sure you bring one with you," West said, and advised riders to check helmet fit and watch for road crossings.
West pointed listeners to trail connections near several stations, citing the South Acton commuter rail station and nearby multiuse trails, and encouraged residents to try the system during the warmer months.
