Redington Shores adopts tentative millage rate of 1.6896 mills, sets public hearings

The Town of Redington Shores Board of Commissioners on July 23, 2025 unanimously approved a tentative ad valorem millage rate of 1.6896 mills, a procedural step that sets the maximum property tax rate the town may adopt for the coming year. Vice Mayor Erin Schoos moved to set the proposed tentative rate at 1.6896 mills; Commissioner Larry Maynard seconded and the vote was 5-0 in favor.

Interim Town Manager Margaret Carey told the board that state law requires the town to set a tentative millage rate and hold two public hearings before adopting a final rate. Carey recommended the 1.6896 mills figure and noted the final millage cannot exceed the tentatively adopted rate but may be set lower at the hearings.

Commissioner C.J. Hoyt referenced remarks from a press conference by Governor Ron DeSantis on Florida millage rates, saying the governor’s message was that “as property values go up, the millage rate should go down to decrease taxes.” Hoyt also observed that rising property values are increasing the amount of taxes being collected.

No members of the public offered comment during the meeting. The board scheduled the required public hearings on the millage and budget for Sept. 3 and Sept. 15 at 6:00 p.m. The agenda also listed a Special Meeting and workshop on July 30, a Regular Meeting on Aug. 13 at 6:00 p.m., and a Budget Workshop and workshop on Aug. 27 at 6:00 p.m.

The special meeting convened at 6:00 p.m. and adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
