Board reverts to previous dress code, approves revised handbook review process

The Mountainair Public Schools Board of Education voted on Sept. 23 to revert to the district's previous dress code for the middle and high schools.
Mrs. Jennifer Vigil, the mid/high school principal, reported that she had distributed a survey to students, staff and parents/guardians about the student handbook and dress code. After discussion the board voted to return to the prior dress code standard (no midriff showing); Mrs. Kristin Oliver moved to approve using the old dress code, Mr. Darrell Roberts seconded and the motion carried.
The board also agreed to an annual process for reviewing the student handbook. Mrs. Vigil asked that she be allowed to notify the board of specific changes each year rather than resubmitting the entire handbook for full review; the board agreed this approach.
Student Representative Luke Ochoa told the board that students were disappointed about GearUp funding and raised concerns about unequal treatment related to dress‑code enforcement. He also reported worn‑out middle school computers, describing screens 'popping out' and asking the board to address technology needs. Board President Darrell Roberts acknowledged his concerns.
The minutes record the board's decisions on dress‑code policy and the change in handbook review practice; no appeals or amendments to the dress code were recorded at this meeting.
