Public-safety updates, grants and town celebrations set for late August and fall

Redington Shores heard several public-safety updates and community announcements at its Aug. 13 meeting.
Deputy Chief John Mortellito of Madeira Fire Rescue said fees for a new station have been paid, that construction work is expected to begin within roughly two weeks and that the only remaining permit is from the Southwest Florida Water Management District; he also reported a recent drop in calls. Captain Daniel Doherty of Indian Shores Police reported that Sergeant Jason Hicks was nominated for the Floyd Smith Award for DUI enforcement and education and that Hicks graduated from the Florida Leadership Academy on Aug. 8. Doherty said ISPD secured a $5,000 grant to support vehicles used on the beach and noted an Aug. 28 hurricane-preparedness meeting for staff and commissioners.
Vice Mayor Erin Schoos and Mayor Tom Kapper read a proclamation designating Aug. 30 as the Town of Redington Shores' 70th Anniversary of Incorporation; Town staff are planning a public celebration and a picnic planned for Oct. 4. Commissioners also noted upcoming public workshops: Commissioner Doug Harr reminded residents of an Aug. 20 flood-insurance and hurricane workshop. Commissioner CJ Hoyt summarized recovery-program statistics presented to the board, citing nearly 12,000 applications to Elevate Florida with about 1,500 funded and many applicants waitlisted; she pointed residents toward Pinellas County CDBG-DR and other homeowner-recovery programs.
Public Works introduced new technician Matt Harner. Town Attorney Rob Eschenfelder said a new legal action had been delivered to the town and that he would provide an update after review. The meeting adjourned at 7:13 p.m.
