The Dolores Board of Trustees voted on July 13 to waive the town’s $500 park-permit fee for this year’s Despani softball tournament but set conditions for future waivers.
A public commenter asked the board to waive field rental fees for the tournament so proceeds could seed a new Jolie Strong Foundation (a local 501(c)(3) in formation). He said the tournament has run for 16 years and that volunteers spend multiple days preparing the fields. "So this year, the money for the softball tournament is gonna be a 100% put in the foundation to develop the Jolie Strong Foundation," he said during public comment.
Trustees discussed precedent and the town’s costs for event staffing, security and potential damage deposits. To limit precedent and protect town finances, the board approved a one-year waiver conditional on the organizer applying to form a nonprofit and seeking support through the Dolores Community Fund; trustees said the organizer may pay after the event if nonprofit status is not processed in time and the town could be reimbursed if the nonprofit application is not approved.
The motion passed by roll call; trustees agreed to treat the waiver as a single-year accommodation and encouraged the organizer to apply to the community fund for future support. Several trustees praised the tournament’s volunteer work and noted past waivers for community events when circumstances warranted.
