Staff updates: road chip sealing, community July events, wells and a tabled parking ordinance

City staff and elected officials gave a series of brief reports at the June 9 Planning Commission meeting covering road maintenance, upcoming community events, public-safety concerns and utility work.

City Manager Ryan Robinson said a chip sealer crew from Parowan has been working on Enoch's roads and that city crews are continuing local road work. Council Member Debra Ley outlined several community events on July 3: a Faith in Freedom program at the church on Midvalley (with the Enoch Orchestra), a 7 a.m. 5K race, a 5:30 p.m. parade ending at the church field, and ancillary activities including vendors, games, a dunk tank and food trucks. Ley said volunteers are needed; Robinson said fireworks for the city cost about $12,000 and that the city can afford to host fireworks about once per year. Ley also said citizens have expressed interest in a 24th of July community celebration.

Robinson said the city council had tabled an unlawful parking ordinance and that enforcement and street-lighting issues had surfaced after a reported incident in which a child ran into a parked truck on a neighborhood street; Chief Ames, who spoke to enforcement, said the department sees this as an enforcement issue. Staff also reported that changes to permitted and conditional uses were passed and that definitions will return for future meeting discussion; the city appointed new members to an appeal board. Robinson noted a contractor delay on Highway 91 work (UDOT contractor cannot start until August) and said the Anderson well is progressing more slowly than expected while staff expands and deepens the well. The city will have a booth at the Cedar City Water Festival on June 27 to demonstrate water-conservation tools.

Commissioners acknowledged the reports and thanked staff and volunteers for event coordination.
