Residents urge greater police presence at Broadway crosswalks; scooter safety questioned

During public comment at the Sterling Board of Commissioners meeting on June 1, 2026, resident Lee Sankey reported repeated occasions when drivers ran red lights and failed to yield to pedestrians near the intersection of N. Broadway Avenue and Jefferson Avenue and asked the city for increased police presence to improve pedestrian safety.
City Attorney Scott Bush voiced similar concerns. Resident Kathy Booth told the commission she has observed an increase in motorized scooter traffic and said many riders do not obey traffic laws; she asked whether scooters are confined by local regulation to streets or may operate on sidewalks. Commissioner Clint Bundy and Fire Chief Brian Rife confirmed that the Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacon (RRFB) installed at N. Broadway and Cleveland Street is functional but requires pedestrians to press the crossing button to activate it.
City Manager Ian Hutcheson said he would review the citizen concerns with the Sterling Police Department to help keep pedestrians and motorists safe. The remarks were made during the public-comment period; no policy action or change in enforcement was announced at the meeting.
