Syracuse USD 494 board approves $55,374 camera contract, signs off on $1.03 million in warrants

SYRACUSE, Kan. — The Board of Education of Unified School District No. 494 approved a $55,374.07 contract with INA Alert for the district’s security-camera system and authorized more than $1 million in payroll and warrants during its Nov. 11 regular meeting in Syracuse.
Board President Marshall Hart called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and the board voted 5-0 to adopt the agenda. The contract with INA Alert was approved on a 5-0 vote after a motion from board member Griselda Sigala and a second from board member Jonna Upson.
The board also approved multiple payroll checks, electronic fund transfers and benefit payments covering October and early November, with a grand total of $1,030,737.69 presented and approved by a 5-0 vote. The warrant package as read into the record included payroll checks and direct deposits, KPERS and benefit EFTs, and specific check runs for late October and early November.
During the consent portion of the meeting the board approved supplemental coaching contracts for Mendi Battin (junior high girls basketball assistant coach) and Brock Horning (junior high boys basketball assistant coach) and accepted resignations from Amy Norton (high school volleyball assistant coach) and Alia McNown (junior and senior high cross country assistant coach). That motion passed 5-0.
Superintendent Paul J. Larkin recognized staff member Connor Crownover as October’s staff member of the month and provided routine updates including a KESA accreditation-model update, notice that an in-house MTSS trainer session was postponed, an update on a Trane “Turned Key” agreement, and plans to attend the Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) conference.
The board entered several brief executive sessions beginning at 7:16 p.m. to discuss personnel matters concerning non-elected employees. The sessions involved changes to meeting attendees (the board clerk and other participants left and rejoined as noted in the minutes) and concluded each time with a return to open session; no formal action or personnel hires were recorded following those executive sessions.
The meeting concluded with brief board member reports and a request from board member Griselda Sigala for budget updates to be presented at the December board meeting. The board adjourned at 7:51 p.m.
Actions recorded in the minutes show unanimous 5-0 votes for agenda adoption, minutes approval, consent agenda items, warrants, the INA Alert contract and adjournment.
