The Swisher City Council on Dec. 9 debated whether to continue paying reserve officers for extra Wednesday-night patrols and reviewed options for emergency backup snow-plow services.
Council members and staff reviewed citations, traffic stops and a small number of arrests from Thursday-into-weekend activity since April 2024 and discussed whether reserve detail remains necessary through the winter. One council member said, “we're at the point the kids know cops are in town,” arguing that visibility may have an effect. Another member supported a trial pause, saying it could be suspended for December and January and re-evaluated at the council's February meeting.
On snow response, public works staff reported only a single written estimate was available in the packet and that two or three additional bids were outstanding. Staff said trucks were operational and that the closest available contractor was Brown's; members agreed to table a final contract until the next meeting but authorized public works to call an available contractor if an imminent storm made immediate assistance necessary. The council discussed basic emergency procedures, mapping and coordination so contractors will know city priorities if called.
No formal ordinance change or long-term contract was adopted at the Dec. 9 meeting; the council set a February date to reassess Wednesday-night reserve coverage and requested public-works staff return with multiple snow-plow estimates for formal approval.
