The Norwich Historic District Commission unanimously approved Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) 612422 for 422 Washington Street on July 15 after a presentation by the property co-owner, Tim.
Tim described water damage to a side/back porch, rotted joists and fascia, and his intent to replace deteriorated wood with matching wood ("like-for-like"), reuse decorative elements where possible, and match roofing shingles. He said he would install 6-inch round galvanized gutters and tie downspouts into the existing drainage that runs under a bluestone patio to a yard cistern.
Commissioners asked about materials and visibility; Tim confirmed plans to replace rotted wood in-kind and to avoid non-historic composites. Members said Tim’s explanation and submitted photos made the proposal clear and supported moving forward. The commission voted unanimously to approve the application as submitted.
Regan, the commission chair, noted Tim’s prior experience as a former chair and commissioners thanked him for the detailed overview. The commission will issue written notice of the decision to the applicant the next business day.
