Kennebunk drop-off composting sites collect 1,600 pounds in early weeks

Leah Ingram told the Energy Efficiency Sustainability Committee on May 14 that three compost drop-off points have been used in their first weeks and that Garbage to Garden weighed in 1,600 pounds of material. Committee members said outreach at the May Day event included a children's quiz and distribution of nearly all small kitchen counter compost containers; about ten containers remain and will be given out at an upcoming Kennebunk Free Library event where Mark King of DEP is scheduled to speak about composting.
Leah framed the initial numbers as an encouraging sign of community participation. Linda Miller Cleary, Wayne Berry and Chair Tony Dater said they would follow up on logistics, including asking Town staff (Chris and Kim Carter) about placing road signs to indicate drop-off locations.
The committee treated the report as an operational update; no formal vote or policy change was recorded. Members noted that student community service hours and other volunteer support could help sustain collection and distribution efforts.
