Kennebunk committee evaluates solar for town roofs as state support nears

Chair Tony Dater and committee members discussed municipal solar prospects during the May 14 Energy Efficiency Sustainability Committee meeting. Tom sent a memo saying he and Wayne Berry are evaluating the Public Works Building for rooftop panels and that the roof of the COS building is also being checked for its ability to hold solar arrays. Members were told the panels on the Waterhouse Center are complete and that the committee is pursuing net energy billing information to inform next steps.
Wayne Berry summarized recent state legislative movement on balcony solar and said ballasted (non-penetrating) solar installations are becoming a more feasible option for some town properties. He also cautioned that anticipated government support expected in June should be taken into account when planning municipal installations.
No formal motion or vote on installations was recorded; the committee discussed next steps including verifying roof capacity and obtaining billing and incentive details to build a recommendation for Town staff.
The committee did not set a timetable for selecting sites; members indicated they will continue gathering technical information and coordinate with the Town Manager and public works staff on feasibility and procurement.
