An agency official said the Federal Bureau of Investigation and partner agencies helped prevent major criminal incidents during the World Cup and that about 6,500,000 people attended the tournament in the United States.
"Thankfully to the men and women of the FBI and our partners, we had no significant criminal attacks during this World Cup," the agency official said.
The official put the event’s scale in context: "And just to put that in perspective, we had 6,500,000 people attend the 78 matches in The US across 11 venues," the official said, citing attendance as a factor that increased the complexity of security operations.
To strengthen the security footprint, the speaker said police from every participating country were brought in and colocated at a site "about 45 minutes west of Washington, DC." Those officers were placed together in an Incident and Planning Coordination Center (IPCC), the official said, to "bring in their live threat reporting and their culture in terms of how they view and participate in soccer." The official added, "And we put that in 1 place in the IPCC."
The official described the arrangement as a two-way flow of information: visiting officers shared knowledge about policing their fans, and they also provided real-time reporting from their home locations about threats that could affect matches in the U.S. "And at the same time, they're working overseas in their home locations and giving us information back in real time on any single threat that's coming in," the speaker said.
The remarks attribute operational credit to the FBI and international partners and explain the role of the IPCC and foreign police in monitoring and reporting threats during the tournament. No formal actions or decisions were recorded in the transcript.
