The Lathrup Village Downtown Development Authority on July 17 approved a motion authorizing staff to apply to the Liquor Control Commission for a temporary liquor license for the Lathrup Village Music Festival, scheduled Sept. 12 with a rain date on Sept. 13.
DDA staff and festival producer Lauren told the board the festival has strong local support: sponsorships total $41,746 to date (including a roughly $36,000 carryover), with a $3,000 sponsorship pending. Producer Lauren said organizers have confirmed roughly 45–47 vendors—up from 22 the previous year—including businesses, food vendors (five food trucks plus Kona Ice), a nonprofit presence and government booths. She described family-fun-zone plans that will need volunteers, a free digital photo booth for attendees, and parking and emergency-vehicle plans coordinated with Police Chief Zhang.
At the meeting Janet Bloom, the DDA director, said the board’s approval is to allow staff to request the liquor license in a timely manner; a motion to approve that request was made by a board member, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Separately, the board heard the director’s report on outreach and programs. Bloom described one-on-one meetings with the planning commission and neighboring municipal leaders, the city’s participation in a six-city ReCAST cohort aimed at filling downtown vacancies with makers and small manufacturers, and an upcoming master-plan open house. Staff also reviewed a slate of August community-health activities: weekly Henry Ford Health System lectures on Wednesdays (5:30–6:30 p.m.), an Aug. 10 CPR certification (12–4 p.m.), and an Aug. 14 blood drive (noon–6 p.m.) at the community center; staff said these events are free for residents and named Henry Ford and Oakland County partners as collaborators.
The board also discussed communications and small grants: Bloom reported a sign-and-façade improvement grant from Prose Chiropractic will be presented for approval next month and said the DDA is preparing an RFP for snow and landscaping services and exploring a business newsletter and private Facebook group for downtown merchants.
The meeting closed after public comments raised live-broadcasting of meetings and ways the DDA might support Parks & Rec amid staff-time changes.
