Stanton County board approves playground turf, Reading Horizons renewal, hires coaches and sets superintendent search dates

At the Nov. 12 meeting in Johnson, the Stanton County Unified School District #452 Board of Education approved multiple operational and personnel items, including elementary playground turf installation, a curriculum software renewal, policy adoptions and coach hires.
Bret Kendrick moved and Chantry Scott seconded approval for installation of turf for the elementary playground; the board set the start date for Jan. 5 and carried the motion 7‑0. The board also approved the Reading Horizons renewal (Bobbie Ehrlich moved; Val Zamudio seconded; motion carried 7‑0) and accepted the district’s updated wellness policy (motion by President Lettie Nichols; second by Bret Kendrick; carried 7‑0).
In policy actions, the board approved a dual‑sport policy as presented by Jr./Sr. High Principal Leah Crane. The board tabled a separate uniform‑rotation policy after extended discussion about gray areas in the draft Superintendent Dave Novack is preparing.
Personnel items included approval of assistant coaching contracts for Adam Sierra (junior‑high boys basketball assistant) and Jose Rodriguez (junior‑high girls basketball assistant) on a 7‑0 vote; the board also accepted the resignation of Mitchell Cartwright as head high‑school boys golf coach, approved 7‑0.
Athletics travel was addressed: KC Higley asked to take wrestlers to a meet in Pueblo, Colorado, Dec. 4–5, after a scheduled home meet lacked participants; the board approved the trip 7‑0, with Andrea Jones attending as acting athletic director.
Superintendent Novack reported that local auditors were on site and that he would meet the Stanton County School Foundation Nov. 17 to discuss a grow‑your‑own teacher program; administration is also working on turf bid placement and energy‑cost discussions. Val Zamudio reported that the High Plains Education Cooperative will proceed to court with Elkhart over a balance owed and that KASB will not represent either party; the cooperative will rewrite contracts for member schools.
The board held two executive sessions to discuss personnel matters and then approved several contracts and personnel changes before setting the superintendent‑search timeline: Melissa Wilson presented KASB’s timeline, the board set Feb. 12 to review applicants and tentatively scheduled interviews for Feb. 16, 18 and 19, subject to availability.
