The Plymouth Airport Commission voted 6-0 on April 30 to hire the UMass Boston Collins Center to conduct a search for a new airport manager and staff.
Attorney Bob Galvin told the commission the Collins Center's screening work would take place in executive session while final interviews of finalists would be held publicly. Galvin said the Collins Center typically charges around $15,000 but proposed a fee of $9,500 for this, more specialized, search.
Why it matters: The commission is replacing Manager Matt Cardillo, who announced he would be leaving; Acting Manager Brendan Nordahl currently fills the role. Commissioners said they want to update the manager job description and involve town human resources in the process while preserving a transparent final interview stage.
Commission discussion focused on the scope of the search and the composition of a search committee. Galvin advised against having a quorum of commissioners on the search committee and suggested a panel of five to seven people that could include one or two commissioners, a town HR representative and a member of the public. Chairman Kenneth Fosdick said the last three finalists would visit the airport, interview with employees and meet with the committee before a public decision.
Commissioner Tom Hurley, noting recent turnover in airport manager positions statewide, said, "There has never been the turnover that we have seen in the last 18 months in Airport Managers in Massachusetts." That comment framed part of the discussion about whether to conduct a nationwide search.
The decision to accept the Collins Center contract was moved by Commissioner Paul Worcester and seconded by ViceChairman Douglas Crociati; the motion carried 6-0-0. The commission also voted, by motion of ViceChairman Crociati and second by Commissioner Worcester, to authorize Chairman Kenneth Fosdick to sign the contract when it is presented.
Next steps: The commission will finalize the search committee membership and update the job description before posting the position and beginning the Collins Center search process.
