Soldier Township reviews fire department workload, road projects and plans for new fire station

Battalion Chief Mike Razo told the Soldier Township Board on Nov. 12 that emergency call volume rose from 906 calls (as of Nov. 4) to 942 calls as of Nov. 12. Razo said proposed changes to OSHA standards are unresolved, the chassis switch for engine B-73 should be complete and in service by Dec. 1, 2024, and that onboarding for the ESO records system has begun with a planned go-live date of Feb. 1, 2025. He said work continues on a strategic plan and that an RFP for the tanker the board previously approved has been circulated to interested parties.
Administrator Audree Guzman presented the road department report in the absence of Road Superintendent John Tipton. Guzman said that with roughly 85% of the fiscal year elapsed, 76% of the road budget has been spent and 28 work orders remain open. October activity focused on asphalt repairs before the plant closed for the winter. Guzman said a tracking and grading system is being compiled to help plan future maintenance; about 90% of snow-removal equipment has been serviced. She also noted approaches have been poured at the new maintenance building, yard grading and backfill have been completed to improve drainage, and that shoulder-and-ditching, and trimming/brush control work are ongoing.
On capital planning, Guzman said draft legislative changes related to a proposed new fire station are under review with the Revisors and that a bond election will be required before the November 2025 election. The administration plans to issue a design/build RFP rather than a traditional architectural RFP; Guzman said estimated construction start is spring 2026. She also reported that administrative setup and staff training for the township's new gWorks accounting software will begin this month with full operation expected in early 2025.
The board received the reports and did not record further action on these items at the Nov. 12 meeting. The minutes list no public commenter remarks on these topics.
