Colstrip council hears staff reports on water, budget schedule; resident submits flooding complaint

City staff told the Colstrip City Council on July 8 that routine maintenance and repairs are underway and that seasonal water demand is expected to rise.
A public-works speaker said crews fixed a pavement break on Chisholm and removed and grated clarifier 2 for maintenance. For June the city averaged about 700,000 gallons of water use per day and staff projected the typical summer increase to roughly 1,000,000 gallons per day in July.
A finance staff member reported that the fiscal year ended June 30 and that staff will prepare closing journal vouchers for council approval at the next regular meeting on Aug. 12; the Department of Revenue expects tax evaluations to be released the week of Aug. 4, which informs the budget calendar.
The mayor said she responded to an Air Force inquiry about crew readiness in the Powder River Training Complex and indicated the city supports the Department of the Air Force’s decisions regarding training exercises; the mayor said the Air Force will hold public meetings and that she anticipates attending a meeting in Ashland on July 29.
During public comment, a resident thanked the council for prior action and submitted formal complaint letters from three or four neighbors about drainage and flooding affecting homes in their neighborhood. The resident said the letters were provided to the council for the record and that they appreciated the council moving forward on the issue last week.
Council staff and members also noted upcoming budget scheduling and asked councilors to confirm availability for a budget meeting (proposed July 29 at 10:00 a.m.).
