Soldier Township hires deputy road superintendent; fire and road departments report operations

The Soldier Township Board approved an employment contract for Deputy Road Superintendent Chad Frick, effective June 1, 2026. Member Mike Mathes moved to approve the contract; Member Jerry Glasgow seconded and the motion carried 2-0.
Chad Lady, Fire Chief, reported the department has responded to 525 calls for service so far in 2026 and that the department assisted the Shawnee County Wildland Task Force on multiple fires, sending two apparatus and two personnel. Chief Lady said the township expects approximately $18,000 in reimbursement for that mutual-aid deployment and that he is preparing AFG and SAFER grant submissions.
John Tipton, Road Superintendent, briefed the board on road operations: demolition work on NW 36th Terrace as part of a rehabilitation project, storm cleanup, driveway repairs, culvert jetting, and that NE Sherman Road has been overlaid with preparation for chip seal underway. Tipton said one new Ram 5500 truck has been delivered and the status of the other vehicle is unknown to the dealership.
Administrator Audree Guzman reported that the Conditional Use Permit for the fire station will go to the Shawnee County Commissioners for approval in July; she also said the groundbreaking ceremony was rescheduled for Tuesday, June 23 at 11:00 a.m. Guzman noted she completed several fire- and hazmat-related certifications, that 2027 budget worksheets are being prepared for presentation in July with a budget hearing and approval slated for September, and that she is working with County Treasurer Susan Duffy to improve township access to public information. Guzman also said she is working with legislators on a proposed change to Statute 80-410 to move the annual fiscal report deadline from January 31 to March 1. Cassie Downing is registered as a candidate for the township clerk vacancy.
The board announced township office closures for Juneteenth (June 18) and Independence Day (July 2). Member Mathes moved to adjourn the meeting; Member Glasgow seconded and the motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 4:29 p.m.
