Conrad police ask council for funds for radios, cameras, data storage and evidence disposal

Police Chief Cory Smith told the council at the Aug. 18 work session that the department needs additional funding to complete several projects and upgrade equipment.
Smith said requests include new radios, body cameras and dash cameras, and in-car computers to improve access to warrants. He reported the dog pound needs repairs and fixture replacement, and said training and supply costs have risen.
Smith also described an operational need to upgrade electronic data storage and to move to cloud services; he said disposing of older evidence, including drugs, via a private agency is necessary to comply with state guidelines and will require funding. He added that fees incurred during recent homicide investigations are factored into budget numbers.
Smith said the city may lose state police training funds and suggested using accumulated training funds if state support is not renewed. The minutes record the request and the council's review of departmental budget needs; no formal appropriation or vote on the police budget was recorded at the work session.
