Conrad officials flag water contract discrepancy with North Central, schedule PER review

Public Works Director David Zimbelman reported to the council on Novembers' public works activity and raised a concern about the town’s long-term water arrangements with regional supplier North Central. Zimbelman said a 2008 contract in the city’s records indicates Conrad is obligated to take 35% of its water from North Central; he contrasted that with the supplier’s expectation that the town would take 100%.
Zimbelman told the council he is concerned that permanently shutting down the local water plant would make Conrad dependent on North Central for both water quality and future rates. To evaluate options, the council has scheduled a meeting the week of Jan. 5 to review a Preliminary Engineering Report (PER) that will inform whether to continue local production or shift more reliance to the regional supplier.
The public works report also noted recent vandalism at The Legion Park bathrooms and described the repairs as costly for the city. No formal motion or vote on the water supply was taken at the Dec. 16 meeting; council members were briefed and directed staff to pursue the PER review.
