The Colstrip City Council voted to approve the preliminary fiscal year 2025–26 budget at its meeting. A councilmember moved to adopt the preliminary budget and the motion was seconded; the council then recorded approval.
City staff told the council they have been working on budgeting and financial deadlines over the past two weeks, and that the local government study commission will hold a public hearing on Sept. 8 to present the six forms of government allowed under Montana law and solicit feedback. Staff also said the city expects to have financial reports completed by the end of the calendar year and an audit in March 2026.
Mayor commented that the city is preparing materials and outreach, including a short public presentation and a brief 10-question survey, to encourage citizen input at the study commission hearing. The council did not request further public comment before the vote.
The approval sets the preliminary spending plan for the next step of the budget process, including formal hearings and any later adjustments before final adoption.
