Commission renews Southwest regional juvenile detention agreement; $260 daily rate noted

The Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Commission voted 5-0 on April 7 to approve the Southwest Regional Juvenile Detention interlocal agreement, a multi-county arrangement in place since 1992 that the County said continues to provide detention services for participating counties.
Commissioner Ed Beaudette explained the agreement covers detention services for approximately 11 counties in southwest Montana and said the current rate is $260 per day. He noted that while Anaconda-Deer Lodge County has often used alternative placements in recent years, when juveniles require secure detention the cost can be lengthy and disruptive to local budgets. "This is something that we need to participate in and it needs to be signed and sent off by April 17th," Beaudette said.
County Attorney Morgan Smith echoed concern about potential budget impacts, noting that prolonged detention can be expensive and stressing the practical value of continuing the interlocal arrangement. The Commission approved the grant/renewal on a motion by Commissioner Ed Beaudette, seconded by Commissioner Steve Gates.
