Sleepy Eye council unanimously approves donations, licenses and alley improvement order

At its June 9 meeting the Sleepy Eye City Council unanimously approved a package of routine business: Resolution 11-2026 accepting donations, a seasonal liquor license for the Sleepy Eye Baseball Association (July 1–Sept. 30), Resolution 13-2026 to order alley paving (approx. $23,000), and accepted a clean 2025 audit. Budget meetings were scheduled for July.
The Sleepy Eye City Council on June 9, 2026, approved a series of routine actions including acceptance of donations, a seasonal liquor license for the Sleepy Eye Baseball Association and an order to pave an alley between Molkenhaus Condos, Sturm Funeral Home and the Brown County Extension Office. All motions carried by unanimous 5–0 votes.
Mayor Joann Schmidt presided over the council meeting in the council chambers at 200 Main Street East. Councilors Gary Windschitl, Nathan Stevermer, Douglas Pelzel, Christina Andres and Scott Krzmarzick were present, along with City Manager Bob Elston, City Clerk Michelle Strate, Engineer Matt Miller, Officer Elliott Waterbury and City Attorney Alissa Fischer Groen.
Councilor Christina Andres moved to approve the minutes of the May 12, 2026 regular meeting; Councilor Douglas Pelzel seconded and the motion carried 5–0. The council then approved Resolution 11-2026 to accept donations to the city; that motion also passed 5–0.
The council approved a seasonal liquor license for the Sleepy Eye Baseball Association for July 1 through September 30; the motion carried 5–0. A separate motion not to object to an exempt gambling permit for the Sleepy Eye Chamber of Commerce for Summerfest weekend also passed 5–0.
A petition was presented asking the city to place a bituminous surface on the alley between Molkenhaus Condos, Sturm Funeral Home and the Brown County Extension Office. The council, on a motion by Councilor Nathan Stevermer and second by Councilor Scott Krzmarzick, approved Resolution 13-2026 to order the improvements and to include the interest rate for assessments. The council recorded the estimated project cost at approximately $23,000; the precise assessment amounts and interest rate will be determined through the improvement process.
The council approved combining lots 724 and 728 Maple Street SW to allow an addition to an existing garage; that motion carried 5–0. Councilor Nathan Stevermer moved, and the council carried, a motion to call for the second reading of Ordinance #237 to rezone Lots 11 and 12, Block 2, Nelson's 2nd Addition from Residential to Business Industrial.
City Manager Bob Elston set budget-planning meetings for July 1, 8 and 15 at noon and reported that the municipal pool is open. Elston updated the council on ash tree removals: of roughly 150 trees marked for removal as of June 5, 2026, 91 have been removed (stumps not included) and about 15–25 trees have been replanted to date.
Councilor Scott Krzmarzick moved and Councilor Douglas Pelzel seconded approval of the Police Report and Cash Fund Balances; the council approved them 5–0. Councilor Christina Andres moved to approve payment of the bills; Councilor Nathan Stevermer seconded and the motion carried 5–0.
Auditor Sara Oberloh presented the 2025 audit. On a motion by Councilor Gary Windschitl and second from Councilor Christina Andres, the council accepted the audit as unmodified (clean) and directed that the audit report be submitted to the State Auditor by June 30, 2026. The meeting was adjourned at 7:58 p.m.
Next steps: the council will hold scheduled budget meetings on July 1, July 8 and July 15 at noon.
