Sleepy Eye City Council approves routine permits, liquor licenses and donations; schedules special meeting

The Sleepy Eye City Council on April 14, 2026 approved a set of routine governance items, including the March 10 meeting minutes, a donations resolution, liquor license renewals, and a fireworks permit, and it scheduled a special meeting for April 29.
Councilor Christina Andres moved and Councilor Douglas Pelzel seconded approval of the March 10, 2026 regular meeting minutes; the motion carried 5-0, recorded as council votes. The council also approved Resolution 7-2026 to accept donations to the city; that motion carried 5-0.
The council voted to renew annual liquor licenses for local establishments and approved seasonal/temporary licenses for community events. The approved seasonal licenses include Knights of Columbus (July 4, 2026), St. Mary’s Church (July 26, 2026), the Servicemen’s Club (August 21, 2026) and Sleepy Eye Brewing Co LLC (August 21–22, 2026). The council approved these renewals and temporary licenses by voice motion, recorded as 5-0 in the minutes.
Councilors also approved a fireworks permit for retail sales by JANU-4 (Freedom) and for the Sleepy Eye Fire Department to conduct a fireworks display on Sleepy Eye Lake for the Fourth of July celebration; the motion carried 5-0.
On financial business, the council approved the police report and cash fund balances and approved payment of bills; both motions were recorded as carried 5-0. Mayor Joann Schmidt and City Clerk Michelle Strate are listed on the minutes as signatories. The meeting adjourned at 7:24 p.m.
The council set a Special Meeting for April 29, 2026 at noon; a finance meeting will follow. City Manager Bob Elston also reminded councilors of the League of Minnesota Cities conference scheduled June 24–26 and asked councilors to notify the clerk by May 1 if they plan to attend.
