Wanamingo council adopts maintenance plan, sets 2026 budget workshop and approves Fourth of July arrangements

The Wanamingo City Council on June 9 approved a slate of routine resolutions and set a date for a budget workshop as City staff prepare a draft 2026 budget.
The council unanimously approved Resolution 25-039 adopting the 2025 third-quarter maintenance work plan and Resolution 25-040 to set a date for a budget workshop. City Administrator Michael Boulton said he will provide a first draft of the 2026 Wanamingo city budget to council members in the coming weeks and cautioned that the final state budget from a special legislative session could affect city revenues and costs. He said inflation and planned capital projects — including a proposed street shop rehabilitation in 2026 — are pressuring the upcoming budget.
Councilmembers also approved a series of Fourth of July–related items. Resolution 25-041 declared the Wanamingo 4th of July celebration a community event; 25-042 accepted monetary and in‑kind donations for the fireworks; and 25-043 approved separate land‑lease agreements with WANA-PROP LLC, 890 3rd Avenue LLC and Concast Inc. for the July 3 Fireman’s Dance and July 4 fireworks. All motions passed on voice votes recorded as 4-0-0.
On city investments, Boulton presented an update on certificates of deposit. The city opened four CDs in 2023 with an initial principal of $1,000,000 and reported $49,760.92 interest earned on a 13‑month CD; the city reinvested $1,049,760.92 in four separate CDs in May 2024 at a special 13‑month rate of 5.09%. Those CDs matured in early June 2025 and staff discussed options with Security State Bank for reinvestment. Boulton said estimated interest of about $45,784.50 will be allocated across the general, water and sewer funds and that the city uses a mix of checking, CD and money‑market accounts to diversify holdings.
