RSU 18's board held first readings of multiple policies, including EBBD (temperature standards) and EBCD (safety committee language). These were first readings; no final votes were taken.
On EBBD (temperature standards) the draft sets a working range with a minimum of 62°F and maximum of 82°F and provides flexibility for operational responses (fans, consolidation of classes, altering schedules). Board members asked about cost implications and historical closures; administration said building conditions rarely reach 82°F and closures have been rare.
On policies addressing safety and the safety committee, board members raised concerns about legal and liability language. One board member cautioned that wording such as "taking every possible precaution" could create unrealistic or legally risky expectations and recommended softer phrasing (for example, "prudent precautions") and consultation with legal counsel. Members agreed to return the drafts to the policy committee for refinement and suggested seeking a legal opinion before second reading.
These policies will return for a second reading at a future meeting after committee review and any legal input.
