Toccoa commission donates surplus fire engine to Johnson County, approves dumpsters purchase; public voices Whitman Street concerns

At the June 22 Toccoa City Commission meeting, commissioners unanimously declared a fire engine surplus and approved donating it to Johnson County.
Commissioner Gail Fry moved to declare the fire engine surplus and to donate it to Johnson County; Vice‑Mayor Michelle Jamieson seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
The commission also approved the purchase of a commercial dumpster from Wastequip. Commissioner Terry Carter moved to approve the purchase; Commissioner Gail Fry seconded the motion and the vote was unanimous.
During public comment, four residents raised local concerns. Braxton McCarter discussed the Whitman Street Building and said he did "not appreciate the way the appointments to the Downtown Development Authority were handled." Larry Mayfield called attention to trees hanging over and sidewalks needing cleanup on Spring Street, Hughes Street and the south side of town. Brenda Henderson Davis requested use of the Whitman Street Building to store memorabilia and hold meetings. Robbie Banks also spoke about Whitman Street.
Mayor Evan Hellenga called for adjournment at the end of the regular meeting.
