He gave cost estimates for options: exterior renovation about $4,000 per unit; removal roughly $5,000 per unit (excluding abatement costs); asbestos abatement costs around $30,000 per 2,000 square feet; and asbestos testing about $3,000 per unit.
Board members raised safety and appearance concerns and suggested alternatives, including selling units via govdeals or replacing certain storage units with small metal storage buildings (a cited example cost about $10,000 installed). Several members urged starting a phased effort to remove or replace the oldest and most deteriorated units; others noted some schools rely on the storage space and want to retain certain units.
No formal decision to demolish or sell units was recorded; the superintendent and staff said they would inspect and bring a proposal and pictures, and the district would pursue options, including potential online auction or targeted removal proposals.
Next steps: district staff will inspect units further, assemble proposals with photos and cost comparisons (remove, renovate, replace with storage buildings, or list for sale) and present recommendations at a future meeting.
