Presenter urges Tucker County Schools to approve middle-school soccer program

A parent presenter asked the Tucker County Schools board to approve formation of a coed middle-school soccer team, saying the program would keep local students engaged and reduce travel to other counties.

"We do know that there are currently at least 20 students not participating in any fall sports here who, if we had a soccer program here, could be," the presenter said, arguing that those students "would be able to" join a school program. She told the board the community has a coach—naming Darren Leclerc—and local business and parent support to cover equipment and volunteer needs.

The presenter described practical limits and a start-up approach: the team would be coed, would play only away games initially because the district lacks a regulation home field, and the organizers would register with the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WBSSAC) and meet state education standards. "We have a very experienced and qualified coach, Darren Leclerc, who will take the WBSSAC certification and meet West Virginia Department of Education standards," the presenter said.

The superintendent told the presenters that, procedurally, an official proposal must come from the high school athletic director and the principal. "If the board decides to bring this back to make an agenda item, we might invite you back at that time so that we can ask questions," the superintendent said, outlining the next step for the request.

The presenter emphasized community interest and sustainability, noting parents and local coaches have offered equipment, coaching clinics and field maintenance support. The board did not take formal action on the request during the meeting; staff were directed to follow the district process so the item can be considered formally at a future agenda.
