Board approves summer intervention hires under House Bill 3035 and several personnel appointments

The Tucker County Board of Education approved hiring two K–3 intervention teachers — one math-focused and one reading-focused — to provide pullout instruction during the Energy Express summer program, a measure the superintendent said meets requirements of House Bill 3035 (Third Grade Success Act).
Superintendent Amber told the board Tucker County applied for and received an Energy Express grant and will use pullout sessions with licensed teachers to address students identified as behind. She said 103 kindergarten through third-grade students are currently identified as not on grade level; the district plans to prioritize those students for available Energy Express slots (64 slots) and expects roughly 30 of the identified students to enroll. The summer program will run five days a week for six weeks, with pullouts scheduled during the Energy Express day; the exact pullout length will depend on enrollment.
Funding for the two intervention positions comes from the 21st Century/Energy Express grant; Amber said if additional staff are needed outside of grant funding, the district would request payment from general funds.
The board also approved personnel actions that followed an executive session. The superintendent recommended and trustees approved hiring Cassandra Kefflinger as custodian at Tucker County High School (effective Feb. 3, 2026) and naming Carol Fikes as a substitute custodian for the 2025–26 school year. The board approved extracurricular employment recommendations, including Derek Bolliard as head cross-country coach and Hayden Wamsley as assistant cross-country coach for the 2026–27 season. All votes on these personnel and extracurricular items were recorded as 4–0.
Trustees asked administration to monitor enrollment in the intervention program and to notify the board promptly if additional staffing or general-fund support will be necessary.
