Tucker County enrollment falls below 900; board notes small attendance gains

An Administrator reported district enrollment by school — Davis Thomas 197, Tucker Valley 445 and the high school 255 — and said chronic absenteeism has improved since the first nine weeks, with school-level rates of 11.229% (Davis Thomas), 10.023% (Tucker Valley) and 20.676% (high school), yielding a countywide total of 13.532%.
“The sad thing that we’re gonna notice with this report…Tucker County Schools is now down to 897 students,” the Administrator said, noting a mix of illness and longer-term demographic trends.
Board members pressed staff on transfer policy and classroom capacity. Staff said transfer applications for the 2026–27 school year open March 1 and that transfers are subject to class-size guidelines, discipline history and teacher availability. The Administrator cautioned that some grades are full and said safety limits set by the fire marshal constrain maximum class sizes (noting a practical cap near 23 students in some rooms).
The Administrator also reported 133 nontraditional students countywide — 70 homeschoolers, 61 using the HOPE scholarship, and two in a micro-school — and said the district is tracking those numbers as part of enrollment planning.
Board members did not take formal action on broader enrollment strategy at the meeting. Staff said they will continue to accept transfer applications according to the published window and to bring capacity concerns forward as needed.
Next steps: the district will continue to timestamp and process transfer applications beginning March 1 and bring any proposals to the board if policy changes or capacity limits require action.
