Board reads several student-related policies for first reading; votes set for Aug. 17

The Valley Central Board of Education used its July 20 meeting to conduct first readings of multiple student-related policies and posted the documents on the district website for public review ahead of an August vote.
Board President read descriptions for policy 5200 (cocurricular and extracurricular activities), 5280 (interscholastic athletics), 53.13.2R (in-school suspension regulation) and 53.13.3 (student suspension and removal), a student-records policy citing FERPA and New York State education law, policy 5150 on students in temporary housing under the McKinney-Vento Act, and board organizational meeting procedures. The president said these items will be voted on at the Aug. 17 meeting.
The superintendent, introduced in the agenda as the district's superintendent of schools, briefly reported on summer-school visits and praised staff. "They were very, attentive, and and they look like they were having fun even though I know it's no great joy to come during the summer," the superintendent said while describing July site visits.
The board noted that the student safety policy (5450 in the readout) is being removed because the district no longer maintains that policy in its current form. Members and staff did not debate the policies in depth during the meeting; the materials were posted for review and will return for a formal vote next month.
The board encouraged the public to review the posted policies on the district website prior to the Aug. 17 meeting when the board will consider adoption.
