Ely Council suspends open burning for summer and approves 2.5% COLA side letters

The Ely City Council on May 28 approved several operational items: a summer suspension of open burning and cost-of-living adjustments for unionized city employees.
Council approved a recommendation to suspend open burning within city limits from June 1 through September 30, 2026; previously issued open burning permits remain valid. "This proposed action would not affect previously approved Open Burning permits," the agenda language stated. Councilman Dennis Perea moved to approve the suspension and Councilwoman Jerri Lynn Williams-Harper seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
The council also approved side letter agreements providing a two-and-one-half percent (2.5%) cost-of-living adjustment to the Operating Engineers Local No. 3 contract and a similar 2.5% increase for the City of Ely Fire Department. Both motions carried unanimously. Phil Herring, representing the union, noted the increase will take effect July 1.
Council minutes record the actions and the clerk will finalize documentation for personnel and operational implementation.
