Councilwoman Michelle Yeoman said the Tree Board favored the oak's shape and survivability in Ely. Public Works Director Mike Cracraft noted he researched both species and preferred the Autumn Gold ginkgo for its symmetry and drought tolerance but acknowledged the oak's overall resilience and lower pruning burden, and indicated the city's maintenance capacity influenced the decision.
The council also unanimously approved a formal proclamation declaring May 7, 2026, as Arbor Day in Ely and accepted a tree-planting event in coordination with Learning Bridge Charter School; Nevada Plants, a 501(c)(3), will donate trees for the project.
The motion to change the planned street tree and the Arbor Day proclamation each passed by unanimous vote.
