Ely council approves second readings of five municipal-code amendments

Ely, Nev. — The Ely City Council on Feb. 12 approved second readings of five ordinances that amend Title 1, Chapter 6 of the Ely Municipal Code, each motion carrying unanimously.

Mayor Nathan Robertson opened a public hearing on Ordinance Nos. 766, 767, 768, 769 and 770, which the meeting materials describe as updates to provisions in Chapter 6 governing administrative positions and deputies. After the hearing, Councilman Terrill Trask moved to approve the second reading of Ordinance No. 766 (Bill 2026‑01); Councilwoman Michelle Yeoman seconded. The council followed the same procedure and vote for Bills 2026‑02 through 2026‑05. Each motion was recorded as carried unanimously.

The council took the votes following a public comment period in which resident George Chachas criticized the proposed changes and raised concerns about city recordkeeping and the performance of the city clerk. "Your Clerk fails to perform all duties required by Nevada law and prescribed by City ordinance and resolution," Chachas said during the hearing, later adding that he believed City Hall was "top-heavy" and urging the council to focus on existing code rather than revising job descriptions.

City Attorney Chris Arabia interjected at one point to emphasize hearing scope, saying Chachas had wandered off the specific topic under consideration.

The second‑reading approvals put the ordinances one step further through the council's legislative process; the meeting record shows the council approved the second readings but does not record additional procedural steps or final proclamations of effective dates in the public minutes presented at the meeting.

The council adjourned at 5:40 p.m.
