Great Basin College launches Construction Technology skills certificate in Ely

Shemayne Pitts, Director of the Great Basin College Ely Center, told the council the college will launch a Construction Technology Skills Certificate the day after the Jan. 22 meeting. The program, developed with the White Pine County School District, is open to the public and to high school students 15 years and older; high school students aged 16 and older can enroll free through EmployNV and earn dual credit toward both high‑school and college requirements.
Pitts said the 10‑credit certificate covers job‑site safety, blueprint reading, safe use of hand and power tools, and basic framing techniques (floors, walls, ceilings and roofs). Credits are transferable to Nevada System of Higher Education institutions for students who choose to continue into construction‑related degree programs. Pitts asked the council to help promote the program to residents and employers as a workforce‑development resource.
