Tracy Phillips, AA, asked the City Council at its May 26 meeting to reduce the weekly fee to rent the school meeting room from $20 to $10 to help her group maintain meetings.
Councilman Lewis moved to reduce the weekly fee to $10 but then withdrew that motion after Mayor Leonard Tartt said approving a cut could prompt similar requests from other groups. Phillips and Christie Holland stated AA must be self-supporting but may accept donations from individuals and in-kind contributions; they said businesses may not donate. After discussion, Councilman Lewis made a motion to table the issue, seconded by Councilman McClendon; the motion carried 4–0.
Mayor Tartt asked for time to produce a possible solution; the Council did not take a final vote on the fee and directed staff to return the item for further consideration at a future meeting.
